Sustainable Interior Design in Mumbai: Designing as if the Future Were a Client
On designing as though the future were sitting at the table — and why sustainable interior design is, finally, just good design.
For a long time, sustainability in interior design was treated as a compromise — a virtuous sacrifice of beauty for conscience. At Bricolage Bombay we have come to see it the other way around. The most beautiful, tactile, enduring interiors we design in Mumbai are also the most sustainable, because honest material, local craft and climate intelligence are not constraints on good design; they are its foundation. Sustainable interior design is not a style you add. It is a way of thinking that, done well, simply produces better rooms.
To design sustainably is to design as if the future were a client — one who will live with every decision we make today.
Natural materials, honestly used
Why does a room made of real, ageing materials feel more alive than one of synthetic perfection?
The heart of sustainable interior design is material honesty. When we redesigned Avhyay Resort, we built with stone, timber and natural mud plasters — materials that are low in impact and high in soul, that age gracefully and connect a space to its place. These surfaces are not only kinder to the planet; they are warmer to live with than any synthetic substitute. A Mumbai interior built from honest, natural material has a depth that no manufactured perfection can imitate.
The deepest recycling is reuse
What is more luxurious than something new — something old, given a second life?
True sustainability begins before recycling, with reuse. At Avhyay, the reception desk was crafted from reclaimed doors of a Jain temple; across our work we look for the salvaged, the restored, the architectural element given a new chapter. This is sustainability at its most poetic and least preachy: a heritage saved from the landfill becomes the soul of a new space. Reuse is the rare design move that is at once the greenest choice and the most beautiful one.
This ethic runs through our sustainable resort design and our ecologically rooted masterplanning.
Designing with the Mumbai climate
What if the climate were a collaborator rather than an enemy to be air-conditioned away?
The most powerful sustainable strategy in a Mumbai interior is also the oldest: design with the climate, not against it. Cross-ventilation, shade, orientation, thermal mass and daylight can do much of the work that machinery is usually drafted to do, reducing energy and producing spaces that feel naturally comfortable. We design Mumbai interiors to breathe with their climate, so that sustainability is built into the bones of the space rather than bolted on as technology.
Sustainability the client can feel
Why is the greenest interior also, increasingly, the one clients most want?
There is a growing understanding among our clients in Mumbai that sustainability is not a sacrifice but an upgrade — that a naturally lit, well-ventilated, honestly built space simply feels better to live and work in. We design so that the sustainability is felt, not lectured: in the quality of the air, the warmth of the materials, the connection to nature. The most persuasive argument for eco-friendly design is the experience of being inside it.
A quiet responsibility
Every interior we make consumes a little of the world’s material and energy, and we take that seriously — not as a marketing position but as a quiet responsibility woven into how we practise. To design sustainably in Mumbai is to leave the city, and the future, a little better than we found them, one honest, beautiful room at a time.
The best interiors are not the ones that exhaust the earth to dazzle us today; they are the ones the future will be grateful we made.
