The swim-up room is one of the luxury hospitality industry’s most seductive inventions: a hotel room from which the guest steps directly into water. The concept is simple but the execution is architecturally demanding — the building must negotiate the boundary between dry and wet space with complete precision, while creating an experience of effortless, hedonistic ease. At Riviera, Morjim, Bricolage Bombay designed a cluster of swim-up rooms that resolves these demands with a language of quiet, horizontal architecture set against the backwaters of the Chapora River.

The rooms read, from the water, almost like a boat slipped into the lagoon’s edge — a continuous band of low, sand-toned volumes that settles gently along the waterline. Broad timber decks cantilever slightly above the pool surface, and each room opens directly onto its own private deck before dissolving into the water. The elevation is deliberately restrained: deep overhangs, soft curves, and screened timber screens tie the cluster together into one sculpted, river-facing composition. There is no visual noise, no decoration for its own sake — only the measured vocabulary of a building that knows its context.

The pool wraps the facade of the swim-up rooms as a calm, glassy ribbon that extends visually to the Chapora River beyond. The pool’s gradient — from shallow, pale, beach-like shallows to deeper water at the infinity edge — creates a spatial transition that mirrors the progression from room to pool to river. At the infinity lip, the eye is carried outward to the river, the mangroves, and the sky, so that the room and the landscape feel continuous rather than separate. The reflection of the sky in the pool water doubles the apparent height of the space, giving these small rooms a quality of openness entirely out of proportion to their actual area.

The swim-up rooms’ most celebrated moment is nocturnal. After sunset, tiny illuminated points embedded in the pool floor glow through the water, creating the impression of constellations floating just below the surface. The effect — entirely composed through lighting design — turns the pool from a recreational amenity into a spectacle, a theatrical tableau visible from across the resort. The Pyramid and its palms form a luminous backdrop; the swim-up rooms, reflected in the star-lit water, appear to hover between the sky and the river.

This quality of place — the relationship between the intimate room and the vast river landscape, between the private deck and the shared pool, between the warmth of timber and the coolness of water — is what distinguishes the Riviera swim-up rooms from comparable offerings elsewhere.
