The design draws heavily on the modern Art Deco aesthetic, a style known for its bold geometry, symmetry, and rich color palettes. One of the key elements of this design is the flooring pattern—cut vitrified tiles arranged in a striking diagonal cross formation. This pattern not only adds to the Art Deco vibe but also plays a crucial role in making the lobby feel larger than it actually is, a clever design solution to the spatial limitations. The ceiling echoes this pattern, creating a seamless visual flow between the two surfaces.
The use of wall panelling is another noteworthy aspect of the design, contributing to both the aesthetic and the functional aspects of the cinema. These panels not only enhance the acoustic quality but also serve as a decorative element that ties into the overall Art Deco theme. The panelling is executed in rich, warm tones, complemented by intricate patterns that reference the architectural heritage of Jaipur and Rajasthani culture, bringing a regional touch to the otherwise modern space.
The ceiling design is a standout feature, blending Art Deco’s characteristic symmetry with modern lighting techniques. The interplay of light and shadow creates a dynamic atmosphere, further enhanced by carefully chosen fixtures that align with the cinema’s bold color palette. The warm reception from the audience has been a testament to the immersive, luxurious ambiance that Bricolage Bombay successfully created.
The studio’s approach to fitouts was meticulous, ensuring that every element—signage, wayfinding, seating, and lighting—was aligned with the overall design vision. The careful color coordination and attention to detail in the fitouts ensured that each area, from ticket counters to service areas, seamlessly integrates with the design. The lighting design, in particular, was thoughtfully crafted to enhance the low-height spaces, ensuring that the cinema feels both expansive and intimate.
This project was a significant learning experience for Bricolage Bombay, marking their first foray into cinema design. The lessons learned in materiality and spatial dynamics have undoubtedly laid the groundwork for future projects, showcasing the studio’s ability to turn constraints into opportunities for innovative design.
